Dental Hygiene Some Basic Tips And Advice

We only get one set of teeth during our lifetime so it is obviously vitally important that we look after them. If we don't, then we can look forward to rotting teeth in future years that either start falling out or turn an unattractive shade of yellow. You may also develop bad breath as well. So let me discuss a few ways you can look after your teeth.
First of all you need to look at your diet and limit your intake of sugary foods. This includes all the obvious ones such as sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks, but also fruit juice, and indeed fruit itself. Fruit contains naturally occurring sugars and are often highly acidic, so they will obviously damage your teeth if you eat too much of them on a daily basis.
You should also try and limit your intake of alcohol, and try and give up smoking if you are a regular smoker. Years of smoking can leave your teeth heavily stained and increases the chances of you getting gum disease and cancer in the mouth, whilst certain alcoholic drinks are high in sugar and may stain your teeth in the case of red wine.
It is also a good idea to brush your teeth twice a day - once in the morning and once in the evening. This will ensure that bacteria and plaque are removed from your teeth and are not present for long periods of time. Therefore you are less likely to get cavities in your teeth, and far less likely to suffer from bad breath.
You should also consider flossing your teeth straight after you have cleaned them, as you may still have food particles and plaque between your teeth that brushing alone couldn't dislodge. Dentists also recommend that you use a good mouthwash twice a day as well just to make sure that any remaining plaque or bacteria is washed out.
Finally you should try and visit your local dentist every 6-12 months for a routine check-up, and to get your teeth cleaned and polished by the hygienist. This will help you maintain good oral health throughout your life and detect any problems you may have before they get painful and develop into more serious problems. The clean and polish will remove any stains and leave your teeth feeling great.
If you follow this advice and do all of these things, then you should have healthy teeth, and hopefully a full set of teeth, well into your old age. Of course everyone's teeth get stained and start to turn slightly yellow as they get older, but as long as you have healthy teeth, you can always have them whitened at some point.
